How To Check Your Vehicle's Engine Oil: Tips And FAQs

The engine oil is a fluid that sticks to the walls of the engine and the pistons. It burns at a far greater temperature than petrol or diesel and hence it can withstand the temperatures within the engine. Engine oil allows the smooth movement of the pistons. Engine oil is also a coolant that reduces the temperature in the engine.
The colour of the engine oil is normally closer to yellow. Some manufacturers add colour to make it look attractive. Do not be fooled if someone tells you a different coloured oil will improve performance.
If your vehicle manufacturer has recommended the use mineral oil, you need to replace it at least every three years. If your car uses synthetic oil, you can change it every five years. However always follow the vehicle manufacturer's instructions for an oil change.
Always take note of how much engine oil is being consumed by the engine. If you notice the oil levels dropping quickly, it is clear sign of your engine being damaged and requires an urgent look by the mechanic. If the pistons are worn out or if the piston rings are not fitted properly, there is a possibility of the engine walls getting a thicker coating of engine oil which will lead to loss due to combustion.
It is always ideal that you get your car serviced a little earlier than recommended. This will allow you to pre-empt any possible damage. Further always get the oil change done by a qualified technician.
There are several engine oils in the market that promise improved performance. However please take note about the fact that high performance engine oils do not offer much improvement in smaller engines. Unless you are driving a big hearted super car, high performance engine oils will not make much of a difference.
