Volkswagen's Plans For Localization & Launch Of India Specific Models
Earlier this week Volkswagen India announced its plan to make a huge investment of 100 million Euro or about INR 800 crore, which would go towards development of new models specific to India and increase localization.
As for the new models, these would be an India specific compact sedan, a compact hatchback and a compact SUV. These fall into the segment that is currently the fastest growing in the country.
Coming to localization of production, the aim is to increase it to 90 percent from the present 70 percent. This would mean moving ahead to make engine and transmission parts locally, with parts secured from local vendors, to a large extent.
The details are yet to be worked out, but it is likely that the company will start making its the 1.5-litre diesel engines here. The reason being, this unit will soon replace the 1.6-litre engines and the 1.2-litre units, across its entry level product range. Not just the Polo and Vento, but also the Skoda Rapid.
VW's growth plan for India will take a at least a few years to be realised and should be completely achieved by the end of the decade, by which time the carmaker aims to achieve a high single digit market share.
Volkswagen will be launching the facelifted Polo in India this year, likely during the festive season. This will be followed by the Vento, which is based on the Polo.
