Tata Motors Luxury SUV With Jaguar Land Rover Aid Being Developed
Tata Motors' previous foray into the premium segment in the form of Aria MPV was a disaster. The car maker realised that customers would not accept it as a luxury car maker right away.
It is then time for round two and this time Tata will take help from its British subsidiary Jaguar Land Rover. According to an ET report a new Tata luxury SUV is being developed specifically for the Indian market under the aegis of Jaguar Land Rover.
The said SUV, codenamed Q5, will be based on the current generation Land Rover Freelander 2 platform and will be a premium product that will be placed in the INR 25 lakh price range. The said SUV will have the same build quality of a JLR product.
The Q5 SUV's rivals will be Toyota Fortuner, the upcoming Ford Endeavour (Everest) and the new Hyundai Santa Fe.
The report states that a team of 45, headed by Karl Heinz Servos are working on the project that will develop the five-seven seater SUV.
The premium SUV will be the first of several jointly developed products between JLR & its Indian parent company. Collaboration would range from using common engines to platform sharing. While Tata Motors would benefit from JLR's engineering and advanced manufacturing processes JLR will be be profited through use of common parts.
Tata Motors premium SUV developed with the help of JLR would become a reality in 2016-17. It remains to be seen whether the new SUV will sport the Tata badge or go for joint badging, as found on Mahindra SsangYong SUVs.
