Surat Commercial Vehicles To Get High-Tech Number Plates
Commercial vehicles in the Diamond City of Surat will soon have to compulsorily start using High Security Registration Plates (HSRP), as per the directive of the Regional Transport Office (RTO).
By June 10th, all types of commercial vehicles in Surat, which includes auto-rickshaws, trucks and goods carriers of all sizes, tours and travel vehicles, etc., will have to switch to using HSRPs.
All new vehicles rolling out of showrooms are already being fitted with HSRPs as per the Central Motor Vehicle Rule, 1989.
HSRPs have a chromium-based hologram of the 'Chakra' image, sticker displaying the engine and chassis number and a non-removable, tamper-proof snap lock.
Apart from use of HSRPs, commercial vehicles will also need to have stickers on the windscreen displaying details of cars and their owners.

HSRPs are being made mandatory commercial vehicles for law and order reasons. Vehicles with high-tech number plates can be easily traced in the event of any sort of violation or accidents.
If a vehicles fitted with HSRP is stolen, the task of locating it made a lot simpler through use of smart card and GPS.
"We have issued an order for all the commercial vehicle owners in the city to update their vehicle information with the transport office latest by June 10. Once the updated information on vehicles is made available to us, the work of fitting the HSRPs will be undertaken. Those who fail to submit their details and are caught without HSRPs would have to face legal action," BM Prajapati, regional transport officer, has said, as reported by ET.
The report also states that the additional snap lock and information stickers would only cost an additional Rs 30 over the price of the number plate.
