Nissan To Develop AMT For Indian Models
Realising the cost advantage Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) provides and seeing the success of the AMT equipped Maruti Celerio, Nissan has reportedly decided to take the same technological path for its vehicles sold in India.
At present, Nissan offers its Micra and Sunny models with its X-tronic CVT automatic transmission, which is superior to AMT and even the 4-speed auto boxes offered by other manufacturers.

However, this JATCO manufactured CVT system is expensive, which will not allow, for instance, the Micra, to compete with an upcoming AMT equipped hatchback like the Tata Bolt effectively in terms of price.
Nissan India has thus decided to climb on the AMT bandwagon as well. However, unlike Tata Motors or Maruti Suzuki, which rely on Italy based Magneti Marelli for their AMT units, Nissan will develop its own in-house.
Nissan will develop an AMT based on one of its existing manual transmission, which will allow it to save in development and production cost.
This would mean that entry level Nissan models as well as all Datsun branded vehicles would likely come equipped with cost effective AMT in the not too distant future.
