Rolls Royce Phantom: All New Second Gen Model In Three Years

By Ganesh

Rolls Royce has initiated the development procress of the second-generation Phantom and Autocar UK has learned that this next-gen luxury saloon will be a significant shift from the existing car, both in terms of design and hardware.

With Rolls Royce design head Giles Taylor only just having started the process of sketching the new Phantom, it would be another three years at least before production stage is reached.

Rolls Royce would continue to power the next Phantom with a V12 engine, but it will be assisted by a plug-in hybrid system. This is of course, to achieve lower emission targets in the future.

However, owing to the not-so-warm reception of the 102EX Phantom concept in 2011, all electric version of the Phantom is most likely out of the question.

Taylor, who interacted with the U.K magazine, has said that the new Phantom "would move on visually from today's model" and that they are working on a design language with a "charismatic expressiveness".

He also made it clear that the next-gen Phantom would be less formal and that the changes in the grille design, lights and air intakes would definitely appear.

Another critical factor that would influence the development of the new Phantom would be its architecture. BMW and Rolls Royce are yet to finalise on a platform, but it is highly possible that it will shift from the existing aluminium spaceframe structure to a carbon fibre-based one.

BMW is said to be keen on using a BMW i3 or i8 like composite structure (carbon-fibre reinforced polymer) for the Phantom. This would not just make the car to be lighter and improve fuel economy, but would also give Rolls Royce more freedom in terms of designing and even allow them to make different versions of the Phantom in the future without difficulty.

Furthermore, use of advanced, lightweight materials to build the new Phantom would mean the ultimate luxury car would keep pace in terms of technology with less expensive models.
