Upcoming Tata Motors passenger cars promise to be a lot different than their models past. That's because in the past few years helping the automaker in developing better cars has been formula F1 and seasoned racing driver Narain Karthikeyan.

Karthikeyan's association with Tata Motors is long and well-known. The automaker has supported the fastest Indian on four wheels through sponsorships for long. On his part, Karthikeyan has been putting to good use his racing expertise in improving Tata's passenger vehicles, especially in the past four years.

ET, which spoke to Karthikeyan, reports that he provides inputs to Tata Motors' Engineering and Research Centre (ERC) headed by Dr Tim Leverton, directly. Suggestions regarding everything from improving driving dynamics, achieving an optimum balance between performance and fuel economy, seating ergonomics to braking and low speed parking and reversing is offered by the talented racing driver.

In short, Karthikeyan covers every aspect of a car. The first production cars from Tata Motors which have been developed with inputs acquired from the racing driver are the upcoming Bolt & Zest. As such, these cars are expected to feel entirely different from any earlier Tata cars that have come out so far.

What's more, Tata Motors is even said to be working on specifically performance oriented cars with the help of Narain Karthikeyan which will come out in the not too distant future.

It is common for racing drivers to be associated with automakers. Ferrari, Fiat, Infiniti, McLaren, Ford, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, the list of car makers who are aided by professional racing drivers in developing passengers cars goes on. Tata Motors, however, is the only Indian automaker which has the fortune of having a former F1 driver helping it in making better cars.
