By Ganesh

Microsoft has offered support for car infotainment systems for a long time, with special versions of Windows acting as a platform for Ford (Sync), BMW, Nissan, Fiat and a few other manufacturers to run their own versions of user interface on.

However, with the coming of Apple's CarPlay and Google's entry into the in-car system space the Redmond company has been forced to rethink its strategy.

Much like Apple CarPlay Microsoft's version allows Windows Phone devices to be connected and mirrored in a car's display. Functionalities are the usual: Access to a few basic and essential services like radio, maps and MP3, along with the ability to make and receive calls, and check emails and messages.

Additionally, it would could also allow car functions such as air conditioning, defrost, wipers etc., to be controlled using its touch interface.

Microsoft Windows in the Car is powered by Mirrorlink, the connectivity standard that's already used by car makers like Toyota, Volkswagen and Honda.

While real world testing is already underway, Microsoft has not announced when it will be launched.
