Mercedes-Benz S-Class Electric Drive Confirmed Without A Timeframe

By Ganesh

Mercedes-Benz is already working on a plug-in hybrid version of the S-Class that should make its debut early next year. That's something we all knew. What's new is the German automaker is also very open to the idea of an all electric S-Class. OK, change that to, sure of building an all-electric S-Class.

Speaking to TopGear recently at the Geneva Motor Show Dr. Uwe Ernstberger, the man in who heads the Mercedes' large car program, revealed that "a complete electric car [S-Class] will be done in the future," though the it the time was not right just yet to launch it.

The main reason why an S-Class electric cannot be had today has to do with lack of suitable battery technology.

"We have to work on the capacities of the batteries to get a better package in the car," Dr Ernstberger said. "Because you do not want to lose all the comfort features of an S-Class for transporting a battery only."

The plug-in hybrid S-Class will certainly pave the way for the future, which can offer pure electric mode driving with a range of 25-30 km. The S-Class plug-in hybrid will deliver a claimed mileage of 33 km/l and will emit just 115g/km of CO2.

Dr Ernstberger also spoke about self driving technology in the S-Class (something that's already been demonstrated) and convertible S-Class, thought he neither confirmed nor denied the company was contemplating an S-Class cabriolet.
