Maruti Suzuki YRA To Get 1.0-Liter Turbo Petrol Engine

By Ganesh

Maruti Suzuki will launch its first product powered by a turbocharged petrol engine next year. The car that will debut this engine will be the all new premium hatchback, known only by its codename YRA.

The new engine has emerged from a need to develop a more fuel efficient powerplant that does not compromise on performance.

The engine, developed by Suzuki, is a turbocharged 1.0 liter K10C unit, with Direct Injection Turbocharged (DiCT) technology. Despite its relatively small displacement the engine will deliver a claimed power output of 90 bhp. The power generated is equivalent to the output of a 1.2-liter or 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine.

Despite the relatively high power output Maruti Suzuki expects a fuel economy of 20 kmpl for its turbo 1.0 liter engine, reports FT.

As you can see, fitting a small engine with a turbocharger has obvious advantages, something that's best demonstrated by another famous turbo 1.0 petrol engine, the award winning Ford EcoBoost.

Other than the new turbo petrol engine, Suzuki is also developing turbo diesel engines ranging from 0.8-liter to 2.0-liter in capacity. These engines will arrive in future Suzuki models including the YRA & Ciaz.

As for the YRA hatchback, it is a global car that will be placed above the Swift in India. The premium hatchback made in India will also be exported to Europe.

Maruti Suzuki YRA will be in the same league as the VW Polo GT TSI and the yet to be launched Tata Bolt, two other hatchbacks that are powered by turbo petrol engines.
