Maruti Suzuki will enter commercial vehicle segment in India next year with a new sub-2 tonne truck that will be based on the Suzuki Carry. The said mini truck is known only by its codename ‘Y9T' as of now since Maruti Suzuki is yet to decide on a commercial name.

Maruti's foray into the commercial vehicle segment is significant not only because of the brand name associated, but also due to the engine that will be found in the new vehicle.

The Y9T will debut with a brand new 0.8 liter twin cylinder diesel engine. This engine which is being developed by Suzuki in Japan will be tested in the Y9T before it is released for use in the company's passenger vehicles. Since engines in commercial vehicles is tuned significantly different than passenger vehicles, the deployment of the new diesel engine in mainstream vehicles will depend on the level of NVH Suzuki engineers are able to achieve, which have to be low in passenger vehicles.

Maruti Suzuki Y9T will also be launched in a CNG variant with a 1.2 liter engine.

Though the Y9T is based on the Suzuki Carry it will be significantly modified to suit Indian customers requirements. However, Maruti is not said to be interested in bringing out a Tata Magic style passenger vehicle variant of the Y9T just yet.

Set to be manufactured at Maruti Suzuki's Gurgaon facility which is also the birthplace of several of the company's passenger vehicles, the Y9T will be priced at about INR 4 lakhs for the diesel version and between INR 4.5-5 lakhs for the CNG version, according to Business Standard sources.

Maruti has not yet decided whether to sell the Y9T through its existing passenger vehicle dealerships or to set up dedicated showrooms to sell its commercial vehicles.
