Mahindra Scorpio Automatic Available Only On Order
Mahindra Scorpio, the SUV maker's most popular model, is outdated in a world of new SUVs and compact SUVs like the EcoSport, Duster and Terrano. Nevertheless, it continues to be the best selling SUV in India.
The Scorpio, launched in 2002, ranges in price from INR 7.82 lakh for the base variant to INR 12.75 lakh for the top end variant. This means, not all variants of the Scorpio sell equally well.
In fact, the more expensive ones sell in such negligible numbers that Mahindra only makes them when someone places an order for one. We are talking about the automatic variants of the Scorpio.
Mahindra Scorpio automatic is offered in two top of the line variants - VLX 2WD and the top-end VLX 4WD. Prices for these two variants are INR 11.72 lakh and INR 12.75 lakh respectively.

This creates an inevitable pricing problem since it overlaps with that of the larger Mahindra XUV500. The automatic Scorpio variants are both more expensive than the W4 and W6 two-wheel drive variants of the XUV500 which are priced at INR 10.69 lakh and INR 11.91 lakh respectively.
This despite the fact that XUV500 does not come in automatic variant and the Scorpio being the least expensive SUV in the country, and not to mention, the most affordable 4WD automatic SUV.
Zigwheels reports that owing to extremely low demand, Mahindra suspends production of the Scorpio automatic until that time when a customer places an order for one. Even after that a customer reportedly has to wait for at least two months for the 2WD variant and longer still for the 4WD due to high demand for the manual variants of the SUV.
Mahindra Scorpio automatic is powered by the trusted 2,197cc, 4-cylinder, mHawkCRDe, turbocharged, common rail diesel engine that's rated at 120 bhp at 4000 rpm and 290 Nm torque between 1800-2800 rpm.
A 6-speed automatic transmission drives the rear wheels and all four in the 4WD variant.
