Green Tax On Old Vehicles In Uttar Pradesh Made Mandatory
In a bid to curb the growing number of automobiles and bring down air pollution, the U.P government has decided to make ‘Green Tax' mandatory across the state.
The U.P government is already said to have given the go ahead for amendment in the U.P Motor Vehicles Act.
What this means is, any vehicle that is older than 15 years will attract an additional 10 percent tax, called Green Tax.
There are estimated to be about 4.5 lakh vehicles that are older than 15 years in the state. All these vehicles would have to be brought in registration again, during which Green Tax will be levied.
Modalities of the 'green tax' would be announced soon.
Experts have voiced their concerns regarding Green Tax thought. The main concern being raised is that in its current state, the rule does not differentiate between private vehicles and public transport or between well maintained vehicles and those with high level of emission.
The number of private vehicles over 15 years old is also significantly less than public transport vehicles, most which are old and hence this will put a significant burden on them, even as private cars will largely remain unaffected.
Thus, experts believe, "A rationalization in the tax structure is required where age of vehicles is not the only criteria but sustainability of technology is also taken into account. A clear structure on imposition of taxes on older vehicles is needed so that those with older and obsolete emission technologies are taxed more."
