Quadricycles Segment Gets Government Nod

The segment does, however, has some restrictions placed on it. For instance, quadricycles can only be run within city and town limites, which means they cannot be run on highways. Also, quadricycles can only be operated as commercial vehicles, as a public transport or for carrying goods. Quadricycles will lastly have to wear the 'Q' sign to differentiate them from other four wheelers.
The formation of the quadricycle had run into conterversy earlier, with Bajaj heavily pitching for its approval, while others, including Tata Motors going against it. The argument was that introducing the quadricycle would be a step backwards in terms of emission norms. Now that the new segment has been formed we could soon start seeing a whole new breed of small four wheelers, which could completly change the Indian public transport scene.
Leading the pack will be Bajaj Auto which already has the RE60 ready for production. Bajaj Auto should start rolloing RE60s soon, considering it already has the capacity to produce 60,000 RE60 units anually. The RE60 was first revealed at the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo.
Bajaj RE60 quadricycle is powered by a 200cc four stroke DTSi engine, capable of about 25 HP. Since the vehicle weights less than 400 kg fuel economy is expected to be decent. The RE60 will also be cleaner than autorickshaws and will naturally be safer due to its enclosed design.
Measuring in at 2.75m long and 1.3m wide, with a turning radius of 3.5m, Bajaj hopes the RE60 to be widely adopted as the next gen public transport vehicle. The RE60, along with similar vehicles that will start sprouting soon, are expected to eventually replace three wheeled auto rickshaws completly.
"This is a wonderful day for Indian automotive innovation. The RE60 will soon be joined by many more similarly small, light and low speed vehicles that will make for a cleaner, safer, quieter world. As an anti-car company we are just delighted," Rajiv Baja stated in his response given to PTI.
