Formula E Spark-Renault SRT_01E may not be a sweet sounding name. But the first ever all-electric Formula E race car more than made up for it with a spectacular display of speed, electric prowess and its beautiful design during its first ever public demonstration in Las Vegas.

The public debut event of Formula E race car was held on the sidelines of the ongoing International Consumer Electronic Show. "Today is a very special landmark for the FIA Formula E Championship and I'm delighted to be sharing it with Qualcomm and all our partners," said Alejandro Agag, CEO of series promotes Formula E Holdings.

The Spark-Renault SRT_01E all electric race car was driven for the first time in front of a large crowd in Las Vegas on January 6, the same day the 2014 CES kick started.

Behind the wheels of the Formula E car was former F1 driver Lucas di Grassi who drove the race car at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.

The Formula E race car was driven along the famous Las Vegas Strip under police escort, finishing at the world-famous Caesars Palace Hotel and Casino.

Designed and built by Franch-based Spark Racing Technology, the race car is capable of reaching speeds of over 240 km/h and it does so with no engine noise, but instead accompanied with the urgent hum of the wheel hub mounted electric motors.

The race car was developed together with a consortium of companies including Dallara (chassis), Williams (battery design), McLaren (powertrain & electronics), Renault (overall system integration) and Michelin (tyres).

Besides the motorsports related companies Formula E is also backed by chip maker Qualcomm Incorporated, which besides being the technology partner, is also one of the founding members.

The Spark-Renault SRT_01E electric race car is currently on display at Qualcomm's stand at the CES Show where Qualcomm is showcasing its Halo Wireless Electric Vehicle Charging (WEVC) technology - new technology that will find a place in Formula E championship's safety cars.

FIA Formula E Championship begins this September in Indonesia. The series will consists of 10 races and will be held in 10 cities across the world, in street circuits.

Ten teams will be participating in the inaugural season of Formula E, one of which is India's Mahindra Racing.

"2014 is a very big year for Formula E with the championship starting in September so it's important to be starting on such a positive note. Today will also be the first of many roadshows we have planned over the coming months as we want as many people as possible to see, and hear, what we believe is the future of motorsport," Alejandro Agag added.
