Ford SYNC To Lose Microsoft Windows, Shift To BlackBerry QNX
It seems Ford is tired of its glitchy SYNC in-car system that's powered by Microsoft's Windows operating system. The automaker is now said to be considering ditching Microsoft and adopt BlackBerry's QNX embedded OS.
Sources privy to the matter have informed Bloomberg that decision to move from Microsoft to BB QNX has taken center stage since Ford CEO Alan Mulally learn't about customers moving away from their products due to malfunctioning car tech, such as touch screen infotainment systems, from J.D. Power & Associates and Consumer Reports surveys.
In-car technology is said to be one of the top selling points (39 percent) while making a decision to buy a car, at least in western markets.

Ford SYNC
Ford SYNC is the automaker's in-car infotainment that's found in over 7 million of its models worldwide. The system makes use of Microsoft's voice command software to perform hands free functions such as placing calls or playing music.

BlackBerry owned QNX is an OS that's found in a wide range of embedded system environments including Audi & BMW cars, military vehicles, Nuclear power plants among others. QNX is less expensive to license than Microsoft's OS and is also said to be faster and offer more flexibility.

Earlier this year, Google, along with Audi, NVIDIA, Honda & GM formed the Open Automotive Alliance - an alliance which aims to bring Google's Android OS to every car on the planet.

Apple Inc will take the fight to Google, with its ‘iOS in the car' and it has found its own set of loyalists in BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan Motor Co among others.
In future in-car systems is most likely to be ruled on of the two giants - Google & Apple.
