Most Electric Vehicle Chargers In The U.K To Cost From 2015
The majority of public electric vehicle charging points in the U.K (which till now are free for use) will cost users from next year. That's because from next month onwards the U.K government provided subsidy under the ‘Plugged in Places' scheme will come to an end.

Charging points across the country are provided by private operators, one major player being Chargemaster. This provider has over 3000 charging points spread across the country. While most of it will remain free to use for some time about 20 percent will become paid-for in the coming months. As time passes more and more charging stations will cease being free. Other charging point providers will do the same.
David Martell, head of Chargemaster says this is a positive step as it will provide funding for setting up of new charging stations and to maintain existing ones.
Even Netherlands, which is easily the world's most EV friendly country, started charging for use of public charging stations since last year.
While paid-for charging stations seem inevitable the cost of charging in the U.K might put off many people. Under different tariff rates charging an EV in the U.K would cost anywhere from £1.20 per hour to £7.50 per half hour in fast charging stations.
The end of government subsidy in the U.K is not ideal for India's Mahindra which has planned to export its Reva e2o EVs by the end of this year to the U.K. The last time the Reva i was sold in the U.K it was helped by various benefits provided by the local government to EV owners.
This time around the Reva e2o will have no such advantage. It is, however, still early days and it remains to be seen how the EV scene changes with changes in policy.
