Autorickshaws In Kochi To Get GPS Enabled Meters, Accept Debit Cards
In what could be termed as a revolutionary step forward, autorickshaws in Kochi could become the first in the country to be equipped with GPS enabled fare meters.
The district administration came up with this idea as possible solution to problem of drivers charging excess fare. While still a proposal, it has received the support of autorickshaw drivers as well.
As part of the proposal, the autos would also provide passengers with the facility to pay using debit/credit cards. Besides making payment of large fares convenient, this would also help in keeping a record of the payment made.
GPS-enabled fare meters will calculate the amount based on various factors such as distance travelled and area. Since fares in corporation, municipal and panchayat areas vary, GPS equipped meters will take this into consideration as well.
The administration is yet to decide whether to introduce the new system on a small scale trial basis or to convert digital meters into GPS-enabled meters over time.
The only major hurdle is the cost factor since these high tech meters and the card swiping equipment could cost anywhere from Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000. The solution to this could come in the form of bank loans with special low interest rates.
Other proposals, part of the same plan to improve autorickshaw service and to make them safe for women, include, releasing smartphone apps for passengers to register complaints against drivers, to prepare a database of auto drivers and owners, and to have autos exhibit driver details.
