In other words, this is a personal traffic light assistant of sort which will perform functions such as count down the time remaining for the light to go green and signaling the start/stop system to start the engine five seconds before the light turns green.

The system works by communicating with a city's central traffic center server and displaying the required information on the car's digital information display.
The Audi traffic light recognition system will even let the driver know whether or not the car can cross the signal before it turns red. If the car cannot the system will advise the driver to start applying the brakes from a safe distance to avoid sudden stops.

Audi says the new system not only adds convenience but can actually save significant quantity of fuel if implemented on a large scale and reduce emissions by as much as 15 percent. The system also has the potential to ease the flow of traffic.

The Audi Online Traffic Light Recognition System is currently undergoing testing in Berlin, Las Vegas, and Verona though the automaker says it is already production ready and is only waiting to be approved by the government.
