Volvo To Launch One New Car Every Year In India

New Volvo cars are set to flood the Indian car market. The Swedish carmaker has come up with new plans to expand its presence in India. The brand known more for its luxury buses than cars has a huge challenge ahead as it tries to compete against three well established German luxury car brands BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz.

Volvo Auto India, the Indian division of the premium carmaker has now been energized by the initiative taken by the company's Chinese owner Geely Automobile. Volvo Auto India chief Tomas Ernberg has stated that Geely is very serious about being successful in India and has already held a meeting of 50 senior executives in India recently.

Mr Ernberg has also stated that Volvo had formulated a strategy for India according to which the company will launch one new car in India every year for the next five years. Volvo which had so far been just a fringe player in the luxury car segment is looking to grab eyeballs with its new cars.

Volvo has not been able to match its German competitors in terms of price as it does not assemble its cars in India. However if what Mr Ernberg stated is true, the situation will change as it is planning to assemble some of its models here in India. This will make new Volvo cars more cheaper than current levels.

Volvo's new cars to be launched in India will be powered by smaller, fuel efficient engines. Volvo's current models are powered by larger V6 and V8 engines and these engines will be replaced by by smaller 1.6 to two litre engines. Volvo is planning to launch a small crossover that can compete against the BMW X1 and the Audi Q3.

Volvo Auto India is also planning to expand its dealer network so that it can reach out to more customers in the coming months. New Volvo showrooms will be opened in Bangalore, Ahmedabad and in Delhi this year. Volvo currently sells the XC90, XC60 SUVs and the S80 and S60 sedans in India. The Swedish carmaker is planning to sell as many as 1,000 cars in India this year.
