Tata Nano Still Has High Potential: Ratan Tata

The car that created ripples across the globe by emerging as the world's cheapest car still has a long way to go, according to outgoing Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata. The Tata Nano as we all know is Mr Tata's dream project and it indicated the strength of Tata Motors as a carmakers.

However, the Tata Nano has not been able to deliver in terms of sales. While many sceptics have written about the Nano as a failure, Mr Ratan Tata believes the small car has a bright future in developing markets.

Mr Tata has accepted that the Nano was not able to capitalize on its image during the initial days of its launch. However no hopes are lost as the Nano is a car that is still the most affordable car in the world.

The Tata Motors Chairman was speaking about the Nano in the annual report of the company. He went on to say the Nano has a huge potential in developing markets. Further with an extended sales and service network, easy availability of credit and improved marketing will definitely improve the position of the Nano in the Indian market.

Mr Tata has stated that the controversy around the Nano's plant in Singur, West Bengal did not help in boosting the car's image. Further he went on to add that Tata Motors never said the Nano was a poor man's car, rather it was an inexpensive car. It is a fact that many people have not bought the Nano as they felt the car would not improve the status.

The Nano's sales have not been able to reach the company's expectations so far. It has managed to garner more than 10,000 sales in a month only on a few occasions.
