Most of the carmakers' diesel car manufacturing facilities are running full on capacity and they are offering huge discounts to attract customers to petrol cars. While around 2 lakh orders for diesel cars are already pending with a waiting period of 4-6 months, petrol cars are available ready for delivery.

A diesel manufacturing unit with an initial capacity of 1.5 lakh engines per year is underway by the country's largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki. Maruti Suzuki Managing Executive Officer (Marketing & Sales) Mayank Pareek said: "There is a clear shift towards diesel cars. We are targeting it by increasing our internal diesel engine capacity and also outsourcing some engines from Italian carmaker Fiat.”

Hyundai Motor India Marketing & Sales director Arvind Saxena said: "Diesel is the biggest motivator to buy new cars in the current scenario.” The carmaker which imports diesel engines from South Korea is on the final lines of setting up a diesel engine plant with an annual capacity 1.5 lakh engines by 2013.

Meanwhile, carmakers like Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors and Hyundai Motor today announced discounts of up to Rs 50,000 on petrol models for a limited period. The country's best selling Alto small car is being offered with a mouth watering discount of Rs 30,000.
