Maruti Suzuki Alto
Maruti Suzuki is all set to launch its new 800cc car this festive season. The Indian carmaker is planning to bring a new look Alto 800 by Diwali and is expected to begin commercial production of the car this July.

Reports say the Alto 800 will be more efficient and modern than the current 800cc cars being built by Maruti Suzuki. The Maruti 800 is a 25 year old veteran, while the Alto was launched more than a decade ago. Both these car's have not had any significant upgrades in recent years.

The Alto 800 is a result of Maruti Suzuki's engineers working on a completely indigenous engine that is fuel efficient as well as cost effective. The engine is said to be loaded with new technologies which will make the Alto 800 deliver high fuel economy. Sources say the Alto 800 will be more expensive than the current Alto.

Maruti Suzuki is said to have used the current Alto's platform for the new car. Further, it has been reported that the 800cc engine being developed is an upgraded version of the current version. This has helped Maruti Suzuki keep development cost down.

However, the Alto 800 is expected to be more expensive than the Maruti 800 or the Alto. While the Maruti 800 retails for between Rs.2.05 lakhs and Rs.2.3 lakhs, the Alto costs between Rs.2.40 lakhs and Rs.3.43 lakhs. Maruti Suzuki also sells a 1000cc variant of the Alto called the Alto K10 which costs Rs.3.14lakh to Rs.3.31 lakhs. The Maruti Alto 800 is expected to be priced just above that of the Alto but it will not be priced above the Alto K10.

The Maruti Alto 800 will be built at the carmaker's Gurgaon plant. Maruti Suzuki has reportedly built test prototypes that are currently being track tested. With commercial production expected to begin this July, sources say the car will be launched this Diwali. The festive season is considered a good period for car sales and many carmakers schedule their new car launches around this period.

The Alto 800's launch can be followed by Maruti Suzuki phasing out the Maruti 800 as well as the current Alto. Maruti Suzuki CEO Shinzo Nakanishi had earlier hinted at both these cars being replaced by one new car. And the Alto 800 will be that model. The current Alto has had a tremendous run in the Indian car market and has been the highest selling car in the country since several years.
