Maruti Suzuki Developing Super Engine With 30kmpl

Reports have been emerging that Tata Motors is set to launch its world cheapest Nano small car with a highly fuel efficient diesel engine delivering 30kmpl. For those who have been overwhelmed with the reports, there is much more from India's leading carmaker, Maruti Suzuki.

Maruti Suzuki is reportedly working on an 800 cc diesel engine producing 40 hp that will deliver an astonishing mileage of 25-30 kmpl. The project is said to be code named E2 and is just in its initial stage at its parent company - Suzuki Motors' Japanese plant.

A source close to Maruti Suzuki was quoted as saying: "The development is at a very initial stage. It is a ground up project, and a lot of effort is being put in. The engine has to deliver the required level of performance, needs to respond ably, deliver on the power as well as fuel efficiency. It will take at least a couple of years or may be more to be ready."

Maruti Suzuki Managing Director S Nakanishi had commented earlier: "It's my dream to see a smaller diesel engine." Without revealing more about it, he said: "The R&D is working on many projects. Electric vehicle, hybrid electric vehicle... that is their job. I don't deny it... they should do it. But the question is when it would be available? And for that we don't have a clear answer right now."

Meanwhile, the small capacity diesel engine is expected to feature in Maruti Suzuki small cars like A-Star and upcoming all new Alto 800. Accoring to sources, the highly fuel efficient diesel engine is expected to arrive by 2015.
