Maruti Begins Car Dispatches Under Security Cover

There was a huge security cover with more than 1,000 policemen guarding the plant. The plant saw unprecedented levels of violence on Wednesday in which a senior executive was killed and the office facilities were completely burnt down by agitating workers.
The Manesar plant usually has a stock of about 5,000 vehicles which are sent to showroom across the country. Maruti Suzuki appears to be sending out these vehicles so that there are no delays at showroom and also to ensure these vehicles are not vandalized in the future.
The Manesar plant has an annual production capacity of 5.5 lakh units and rolls out as many as 1,500 cars per day. The losses arising due to the stoppage in production is still being assessed Maruti Suzuki. It is yet unclear when the carmaker will restart production at Manesar.
The violence hit Manesar plant will mean bad news to people who have booked the Swift and the Swift DZire. The carmaker had brought down the waiting periods of both these cars to manageable levels in the past few months but this halt in production could undo all this. Although today's dispatch of cars can be seen as a good sign, we can definitely say that the waiting period of the Swift will increase soon if production does not restart quickly.
Wednesday's violence at the plant has resulted in complete shut down of production at the Manesar plant. Senior police personnel conducted an inspection of the plant today. They have not spoken to media persons stationed near the plant. Police had yesterday arrested nearly 100 workers who had indulged in violence and arson.
Senior Maruti Suzuki officials have expressed shock at the death of Mr Awanish Kumar Dev who was the General Manager, HR at the Manesar plant. Many officials including some from Japan have been injured in Wednesday's violence and are currently being treated in Gurgaon.
