Ertiga Helps Maruti Become 3rd Largest UV Maker

India's leading carmaker, Maruti Suzuki has achieved another milestone by becoming the third largest utility vehicle (UV) maker. This has happened due to the overwhelming response the recently launched Ertiga MPV has receieved.

The carmaker has displaced Tata Motors to the fourth place with Mahindra & Mahindra and Toyota Motors the only manufacturers before it. The huge initial sales voumes of the Ertiga has increased market share of the carmaker in the utility vehicle segment by eight times to 16.7%.

Meanwhile, before the launch of the Ertiga, Maruti Suzuki has been selling the Gypsy and Grand Vitara only in the utility vehicle segment. With Tata having Sumo, Grande Sumo, Safari, Xenon and Aria models, the Ertiga displacing the carmaker single-handedly adds to the success of the MPV. The fact that the Ertiga has a waiting period of 6-9 months only adds proof to it. The volume sellers for the market leader - Mahindra are the Scorpio, Xylo, Bollero, XUV 500 while the Innova leads Toyota sales.

Maruti Suzuki marketing and sales chief operating officer Mayank Pareek said that the carmaker has sold more than 12,000 Ertigas and has to deliver another 30,000 against bookings. The company is producing 6,000 units against the original plan of manufacturing 5,000 cars per month and it may even go up, he added.

The Ertiga which is available in seven variants comes with a highly affordable price tag of Rs 5.89 lakhs for the base petrol variant. The disel model which is powerd by a fiat sourced 1.3 litre multijet engine comes with a starting price of Rs 7.3 lakhs for the base model. The disel model also claims an incredible mileage of around 20 kmpl.
