Google Licenced To Test Driverless Cars In Nevada

Nevada became the first state in United States to licence Google driverless cars to be tested on its roads. The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announced Monday it has approved Google's application to test the autonomous vehicles on public streets.

Sources said that the driverless car was tested on freeways and in neighborhoods around the state before giving it the approval. The companies which want to do such testings will need an insurance bond of $1 million and must provide detailed outlines of where they plan to test it and under what conditions.

Further more, the car should have two people in it all times including one behind the wheel to take control if required. The DMV has approved a corresponding number plate on the car with a red background and infinity symbol. Nevada DMV Director Bruce Breslow said: "I felt using the infinity symbol was the best way to represent the ‘car of the future.’"

Meanwhile, the first driverless car on test on highways is a modified Toyota Prius by Google. Laser radar mounted on the roof and in the grill of the car detects pedestrians, cyclists and other vehicles, creating a virtual buffer zone around the obstacles that the car then avoids
