Honda Planning To Launch Diesel Brio In 2012

Honda is developing a 1.2-litre common rail i-DTEC diesel engine that could be tested first in the Brio. The City and Jazz will be getting bigger diesel engines that are still under development.
Honda has lost a large chunk of its market share to competitors such as Volkswagen, Skoda and Toyota who offer diesel variants of almost all the models. Honda is keen to tap the fast expanding market for diesel car s in India sooner than expected.
The Brio has been a fairly successful car in India and its sales have not been high only due to its non availability. In fact Honda has stopped receiving bookings to the Brio owing to the long waiting list. Now adding a diesel engine to the small car will definitely mean it has to ramp up production.
A Honda spokesperson is quoted to have said: “Honda is committed to bringing its diesel technology to key markets like India. And to ensure that Honda diesel is best suited to local conditions and offers optimum performance levels, Honda is conducting stringent tests at its R&D centres across several locations"
The Brio diesel could be the best car for Honda since several years. Demand for diesel cars has shot up to high levels and some models such as the Maruti Suzuki Swift and Hyundai Verna have seen about 80 per cent of their sales.
