BMW, Toyota Partner On Hybrid Battery Technology

BMW-i8
German auto major BMW AG and Japanese carmaker Toyota Motor Corporation have partnered for the development of lithium-ion batteries to use in their next generation hybrid and electric cars. The companies aim to produce lighter, higher-performance batteries by using new materials for cathodes, anodes, and electrolytes.

BMW already have a deal with French carmaker Peugeot-Citroen while Toyota have an existing partnership with American electric car manufacturer Tesla. The Japanese carmaker is already a leader in the hybrid vehicle technology with its Prius, the best selling hybrid car in the world.

Toyota will provide its battery technology to BMW while the German carmaker in return will supply its diesel engines to Toyota from 2014. BMW seems to be pinning high hopes on hybrid cars with the car maker recently showing its i8 hybrid sportscar concept.

Many carmakers have their hybrid, electric cars in the market, but the low range of batteries had been a setback affecting their sales. Many countries have also been giving customer incentives to buyers of hybrid, electric cars so as to encourage buying non-polluting green cars.
