More Indian Cities To Be BS IV Compliant

Car Polution
India has comparatively less stringent emission norms. Only 17 Indian cities are now BS IV emission compliant while the rest of the country follows the BS III emission norms. Carmakers continue to build BS III compliant vehicles which are sold in Tier II and Tier III cities.

The Indian government is planning to increase the number of cities that follow the more stringent BS IV norms and three cities will be joining the list soon. The increasing pollution and associated negative conditions has forced the government to quicken the process. It is in fact aiming to increase the number to 50 cities by 2015.

The major requirement for cities to become BS IV compliant is the availability of the right kind of fuel. Oil companies are preparing themselves to deliver cleaner fuel. The Petroleum ministry has said oil companies will be able to deliver BS IV fuel to more than 50 cities.

Ankaleshwar in Gujarat, Hissar in Haryana and Bharatpur in Rajasthan are the three new cities that have applied to become BS IV compliant. The Indian government has stated that the 17 BS IV compliant cities constitute 40 per cent of the Indian auto market. By increasing the number of BS IV compliant cities, the government is hoping to reduce pollution.

The new emnission norms in these cities will mean people from these cities will not be able to buy some cars such as the Maruti 800. mAruti Suzuki has not developed a BS IV engine for the current 800 . It is developing a completely new 800cc engine that will be used in a new car likely to launched in a few years.
