More Buyers Prefer Automatic Cars In India

The automatic gearbox is getting more and more fans in India with more people preferring to buy cars with an auto box rather than the traditional manual gearbox. The automatic transmission's ability to deliver a stress free drive. The fact that manual gearboxes offer better fuel economy is being ignored by many urban car buyers.

Major Indian carmakers like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Volkswagen, Honda and Audi have reported a surge in demand for their automatic cars. While it is quite common to see people preferring to buy premium cars with automatic transmissions, whats is noticeable is that automatic variants of entry level cars such as the Maruti Suzuki A-Star and Hyundai's i10 are also seeing high sales.

Moving further up, sedans such as the Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire and Honda City have sen about 20% of their sales coming from their automatic variants. The Honda Civic has seen about 30% of its share in automatic variants. The number goes up to a whopping 60% in the Honda Accord and CRV.

Maruti Suzuki which had launched an automatic variant of the M800 way back in 1987 has seen a steady increase in automatic car sales. Explaining the reason behind this, Maruti Suzuki's executive director, marketing, Mayank Pareek said people were now more exposed to global trends and preferred to see them in Indian cars too.

Luxury car brands such as Audi and BMW have also had a fair share in promoting automatic cars in India. They started selling only automatic cars in India and people slowly got used to them. Now many luxury car buyers do not even consider a manual as they are accustomed to the relative ease of driving an automatic.

Heavy traffic in city roads has also contributed to the increasing popularity of automatic cars in India. People tend to get tired when they are struck in a stop start traffic and an automatic will be a more comfortable car. Research indicates people spend 60% less energy while driving an automatic.

Automatic cars are more expensive that regular cars and yet their sales are increasing well as carmakers have loaded automatic variants with more premium features. So when you buy an automatic car you not only get an easy car to drive but also more features.

Carmakers have also made a conscious decision to make automatic cars cheaper. They have invested in to the right technology to improve performance and fuel efficiency too so that buyers will not worry about mileage.
