Mercedes Planning To Launch Smart In India
Mercedes-Benz is now conducting a feasibility study for smart in India by testing the Smart Fortwo and Smart Forfour. Both these cars were featured I the Hollywood film The Da Vinci Code. If the study provides a positive outlook for Smart in India, Mercedes-Benz could launch the small car brand in India after 2014.
Daimler AG, which owns both Mercedes-Benz and Smart is looking at India as a market with a huge potential. It considers its Smart small cars will be a success considering the thriving demand for premium small cars BMW has already launched its Mini brand in India.
But Smart will not be in the same price range as the Mini. Reports say Smart cars in India will be priced in the range of Rs.12-15 lakhs. Smart car prices are lower than that of Mercedes-Benz's A-class small cars. Since the carmaker is planning to launch the A-Class and B-Class in India within the next two years we can expect Smart's prices to be lower than the soon to be launched cars.
Daimler is currently developing the next generation Smart models jointly with Renault-Nissan to keep the costs down. This will help Mercedes-Benz India to market Smart cars in the country thanks to their lower price. We might also see Renault- Nissan providing the engines to Smart cars in India. Mercedes-Benz and Renault Nissan a re jointly developing an engine for a compact car. This will help both carmakers keep costs low.
Mercedes-Benz's plans to launch Smart cars in India is in line with our previous reports about the premium carmaker's plans to launch 10 new models in India in the next five years.
