Diesel Car Sales Overtake Petrol For The 1st Time

Diesel car sales surged ahead of petrol models for the first time in December last year. Diesel passenger car sales overtook petrol models capturing more than 50% of the market due to the lower retail price of the subsidised fuel and high fuel economy of cars.

According to a source, the sale of diesel vehicles remained the same even as companies offer huge discounts to retain petrol car sales. While petrol car sales plunged by 15%, diesel vehicles went up by 35% during April 2011 and February 2012, it added.

The huge demand for diesel cars have also increased waiting period of cars such as Maruti Suzuki Swift hatchback, Hyndai Verna Sedan, Mahindra XUV500 SUV. Two days back, Maruti Suzuki had okayed the decision of setting up Rs 1700 crore diesel engine plant at its Gurgaon facility to keep up with the increasing demand.

The sale of highest selling cars like Maruti Suzuki Alto, Hyundai i10 have also seen a dip as they do not have a diesel variant. Meanwhile, sale of diesel cars like Chevrolet Beat, Volkswagen Polo, Maruti Swift Hyundai Verna, Volkswagen Vento increased massively during this period.
