Ford Begins Work On $1 Billion Car Plant

Ford India has laid the foundation for its $1billion car plant in India. The American carmaker intends to make its new plant in Gujarat as an export hub where it can build cars that will be sold in India as well as across the globe.

Ford's new car plant is expected to build as many as 240,000 cars and 270,000 engines per year when it becomes fully operational. The work on the plant is expected to be completed by 2014. Ford's plans for India have been heavily dependent on increasing production of its new cars.

It will soon launch its EcoSport compact SUV in India. It will be followed by few more new models that are part of Ford's global line-up.

One can ay Ford is taking a huge risk by making such a large investment when car sales in India are slowing down. Car sales were not robust last year and there are indications that it will remain the same this year too.
