Running Cost Of Diesel Is Lower Than CNG

Diesel offers lower running costs and better fuel economy than petrol cars. It has now emerged that diesel is also the cheapest fuel in India ahead of CNG. CNG is a clean burning fuel with very less emission, when compared to diesel and yet it has not been successful when compared with diesel.
CNG is cheaper than petrol and yet it has not been able to grow at a pace that is desirable. Even carmakers have noticed it and have developed more diesel variants than CNG variants. The primary reason is the non availability of CNG across the country. CNG is now being sold only in metro cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, etc.
While some could argue that the running costs of a CNG car is lower than any other fuel, it might not be true from now on. One needs to spend about Rs.2.1 per kilometre in a CNG powered Maruti Swift or a Hyundai i20 while the running cost of their diesel variants is about Rs.1.75.
To add to CNG's troubles, its price has increased more frequently than diesel prices. This has also reflected in sales with no visible hike in CNG car sales. While at the same time diesel car sales of some models have increased by as much as 150 per cent.
The waiting period of diesel variants of Maruti Suzuki's Swift and Swift DZire is as long as five months but buyers can get a CNG models such s the Wagon R and Alto are available off the shelf. Another reason for CNG's under performance is the lack of driving pleasure. Drivers feel the diesel cars are more powerful and responsive when compared to CNG.
Carmakers such as Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and General Motors who have offered several CNG cars are now boosting diesel car production to meet increasing demand. Low running costs was the only reason that had made CNG attractive and with that advantage also gone, all we can say is Diesel Is King.
