This is the best time to buy a used car! Due to surging petrol prices in the country, the demand for diesel cars have gone up tremendously affecting the sale of petrol cars. Moreover, it has taken a severe beat on the prices of petrol driven cars in the used car market. Premium petrol driven sedans are the worst hit with a downfall in prices of around 25-30 percent.

On the other hand, buyers who are looking for a petrol second hand car could get a smart deal at the moment. For instance, in cities such as Mumbai and Delhi, a 5 year old Honda Civic which was sold at Rs 5-6 lakh is now available at a price tag of Rs 4 lakhs.

Some of the other petrol-powered sedans which are being sold at low prices are the Toyota Corolla Altis, Fiat Linea, Maruti Suzuki SX4, Ford Fiesta and Chevrolet Aveo. The main reason for the heavy dip in prices of these cars is their low fuel efficiency making running costs higher. Premuim petrol SUVs have also been badly hit in the second-hand market with a fall of up to 40 per cent in price, the Honda CR-V which was being sold at a regular price of 7 lakh is now available at 5 lakhs.

Diesel cars are in such a demand that out 5 cars sold in the market, 4 are diesel powered. Carmakers also have been hard pressed to increase production of their diesel cars to keep up up with the market demand. Yesterday, it was reported that Maruti Suzuki India is soon to decide on the possibilities of setting up a diesel engine unit in its facility in Gurgaon.
