Ashok Leyland Not To Manufacture Cars

Ruling out reports that the company is going to foray into the car market, Ashok Leyland MD Vinod Dasari said that the company has no such plans. Dasari made the statement while speaking to media.

Sources from the recently concluded Geneva International Motor Show had reported that Japanese carmaker Nissan would launch an entry-level small car, developed in partnership with Ashok Leyland, by 2014.

"I do not think we will get into cars. None of my customers tell me today I also need an Ashok Leyland car. Not one. Lot of that is media creation, Dasari said. Nissan Motor Executive VP Andy Palmer was quoted as saying: "We are working on multiple options of price-entry vehicles for the Indian market. One of them is being developed with engineering department of Ashok Leyland."

Ashok Leyland has an existing partnership with Nissan to make and sell light commercial vehicles through which the company had developed the recently launched Dost mini pick up truck. By 2012 end, the company will also launch an MPV based on the Nissan NV200 called Stile.
