Honda To Build Diesel Engines In India

Honda-Brio
Honda, the Japanese carmaker which has not been having the diesel power is currently developing powertrains of 1.4 to 1.5 litres for compact cars. The carmaker, one of the leading car brands in the world, is reportedly planning to manufacture its diesel engines in India. This comes in the wake of the union budget 2012-13 that did not impose any tax on diesel cars.

Honda sales & marketing senior VP Jnaneswar Sen said: "Honda R&D is currently developing a small diesel engine. However, we do not have anything specific to share right now." However, reports say that the company's diesel engines cannot be expected soon as the development process for those engines has just begun.

Sources close to Honda say that the carmaker is planning to hit minimum volumes of 100,000 diesel cars, including exports. The automaker will also set a plant in India once the engines are fully developed, it added.

Once Honda brings in diesel cars to the Indian market, the carmaker could see its car sales on a high. Recently, the demand for diesel cars has increased due to their low running costs. Honda sales has dropped dramatically in the past one year as car buyers switched over to diesel cars. The compact cars that Honda sells in the Indian market are the Brio and the Jazz.
