Hyundai To Reduce Diesel Verna, i20 Waiting Period
South Korean auto manufacturer and India's 2nd largest carmaker, Hyundai Motors has ramped up production capacity of diesel variants of its Verna sedan and i20 compact car by up to 50%.
Hyundai has increased importation of diesel engines from South Korea considering the huge demand of diesel cars in India due to large difference in the price of petrol and diesel.
Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) said in a statement: "The supply of both the diesel cars taken together will go up almost 50 per cent from the existing 7,000 units per month to 10,500 units per month.” By this move, the waiting period of the diesel Verna is expected to drop from 6 months to 2-3 months and by about 1 month for the diesel i20.
HMIL Director (Marketing and Sales) Arvind Saxena spoke on the development: "Increased supply will ease the waiting period substantially. We expect the waiting period for the diesel Verna to drop from 6 months to 2-3 months and for the new iGen i20 to about a month."
Earlier, Hyundai had put on hold Rs 400-crore investment on its diesel engine plant fearing the imposition of additional taxes on diesel cars in the 2012-13 India Union Budget. Later, with the government imposing no additional taxes, Hyundai India reported that it was evaluating the situation and a decision would be made soon.
Hyundai recorded a sales growth of 4.76 per cent to 3,73,709 units in 2011 against 3,56,717 units in the previous year. Apart from the Eon small car, the Verna and the i20 have been the highest selling cars for the company, particularly the diesel variants.
