Toyota Kirloskar To Set Up Diesel Engine Plant?

A source said, "With the demand for diesel cars in India rising very strongly, a request has been made to Toyota's Tokyo headquarter for a diesel engine plant in India. It is very important to have more localisation to meet the increased demand." Currently, the diesel engines for Toyota cars are being imported from Japan.
Toyota's diesel powered entry-level cars, Etios and compact car Liva sold highly in 2011 with both the cars accounting for 63,575 units. Indian carmakers have been carrying on with their diesel engine investment plans after the 2012-13 Union budget which did not add any additional tax on diesel vehicles.
However, a spokesman for Toyota Kirloskar said, "We are going to assemble only gasoline engines, as of now there is no plan to manufacture or assemble diesel engines in India.” Diesel cars have been on high demand in the automotive market outselling petrol cars due to the fuel's low price.
