The Famous Car That Sunk Along With The Titanic
Remember the steamy scene from 1997 blockbuster 'Titanic' where the main characters of the film, Jack n Rose make love in the back seat of a retro car at the cargo hold in the ship? Although the characters played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet were created by James Cameroon, the car which was portrayed in the film was real.
Titanic, which was on its debut voyage had many uber rich persons traveling in it. One such man was William Carter of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania who had carried along with him the 1912 Renault Type CB Coupe de Ville which he bought from Europe. Historians back the claim as the entry of the car was documented on the ship’s cargo manifesto.
To add proof to the presence of the Coupe de ville in the Titanic, William Carter, who survived the disaster along with his wife and children, made a claim of $5,000 on the car with the Lloyd’s of London insurance company.
Ever since Robert Ballard discovered the wreckage of Titanic in 1985, salvagers have shown great interest in the Renault Type CB Coupe de Ville that went into the depth along with the luxury vessel. Many artifacts were retrieved from the sunken vessel which are being auctioned at places for heavy prices.
It is believed that the Coupe de ville which was being shipped in a crate in the front part of the ship is resting relatively intact on the seafloor. Though the classic car could be still retrieved, 100 years of immersion in salt water might have taken its toll on it.
it is quite clear the Coupe de ville will fetch millions of dollars if recovered as a near twin of the Renault that was fully restored to the same color and specifications as Carter’s, was sold at an RM Auction for $269,500 in 2003.
