Volvo launches 3 New Variants At Cut Throat Prices

Volvo S60
Volvo, the Swedish carmaker has launched three new variants of its models that are priced much lower than their predecessors. Volvo has taken on its competitors head on by offering its products at a much lower price despite selling all its models as CBUs (Completely Built Units). CBUs attract more excise tax than cars that are assembled within India.

Volvo's models in India include the S60 and S80 sedans and the XC60 SUV. The current model range is priced between Rs.23.2 lakhs and Rs35.9 lakhs (ex showroom, Delhi). However the previous models were priced between Rs.27 lakhs and Rs.39.5 lakhs.

Volvo Auto India Managing Director Tomas Ernberg who spoke to reporters during the launch said: "We have introduced the three variants with new D3 diesel engine. In the light of changing customer and market dynamics, we have launched our most successful global models in India in the last two years."

Volvo is very confident of its performance in India. The company that managed to sell 320 cars in 2011 is aiming to sell 800 units in 2012. it intends to bring the number up to 20,000 units by 2020 and capture 15% of the premium car segment in India.

The big players in the premium car segment in India have been Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi. The three carmakers are now facing improved competition from other brands after the entry of Jaguar, Land Rover and Renault. Volvo has always been a fringe player in the segment and needs a huge push to achieve its goal of a 15 per cent market share.
