IIT-B Students Unveil Electric Race Car Evo-1

Evo-1 Electric Race Car
Here is yet another innovation coming from Indian students. The students of the Indian Institute of Technology Mumbai (IIT-Bombay) have unveiled an electric race car named as the Evo-1 in Mumbai. This car has been jointly developed by as many as 60 IIT-B students coming from various engineering disciplines.

The Evo-1 electric race car has been developed to compete at the Silverstone Formula 1 race track in the UK. Developed at a cost of Rs.15 lakhs, this is the first fully electric race car developed in India. The fact that it has been developed by students makes it even more special.

Powered by 32kW lithium polymer batteries, the Evo-1 electric race car can be charged fully within three hours. As it is a race car, the Evo-1 also offers a good top speed of 115kmph. However such performance appears to have limited the range of the electric car to 35 kilometres.

The Evo-1 is also an eco friendly vehicle as there are no emissions coming out of it. The students have already started work on next year's electric car project aptly named as Evo-2. The students are aiming to improve the grip and performance of the next version.

Prateek Sharma, one of the project managers of the Evo-1 has said the cost of the car was Rs.15 lakhs and it would have come down to Rs.12 lakhs had the electric motors been replaced by petrol engines. He added that working on the project has resulted in the development of new technologies that will be seen in next year's car.
