Mitsubishi Aiming At Small Car Launch In India

Mitsubishi Mirage
Japanese car maker Mitsubishi Motors is planning to launch a small car in the Indian market. It is Mitsubishi's Thai eco car Mirage that is expected to make way to the country. The Mirage, a five-seater hatchback, will be powered by a 1.2 litre petrol engine.

The company has been lacking a hatchback in India and with the arrival of the Mirage, the gap will be filled. The company currently sells Pajero, Outlander SUVs and Lancer, Cedia sedans in India.

“We would also like to join that segment at some point of time in future,” said Mitsubishi Motors Corporation Japan executive officer and corporate general manager of Asia and Asean, Masahiko Ueki on plans to enter the Indian small-car market.

Currently the company has a joint venture with India's Hindustan Motors (HM) and it is at HM's Chennai plant the company's vehicles are being manufactured. However it has not stated whether its new small car will be built as part of the joint venture.

Meanwhile, the automaker launched its new sports utility vehicle (SUV), Pajero Sport on Monday. The company aims to sell 5,000 cars in the first year and double the figure in the coming years.
