Land Rover Freelander 2
Jaguar Land Rover, the Tata Motors owned British premium car brands are planning to assemble their cars in India if the market develops to a larger scale. JLR's India operations are not very large now. In fat their annual sales for 2011 did not breach the 1,000 units mark.

But this does not deter Jaguar Land rover anticipate a brighter future in India. Jaguar Global Brand Director Adrian Hallmark has stated that the company was considering the option of building its cars in India but the sales needs to create a need for local production.

Land Rover has already began local production, although in a small manner by assembling the Freelander 2 in Tata Motors plant near Chine. Rest of the models are being imported as CBUs. This has meat that these cars are more expensive than competitors such as BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz.

India being a cost conscious market Jaguar and Land rover needs to offers its cars more competitively with other premium brands. Despite being owned by an Indian carmaker, these British Brands have barely taken a bite out of their competitors market share.

JLR is still unsure when t wants to begin local production in India. It has only expressed its wish to build cars in India but has no solid plan for the near future.

The only positive development that we can report is that JLR is planning to open an engine manufacturing plant soon. The company is already investing £355 million for an engine plant in the UK. The Indian investment is said to be a smaller sum.
