General Motors Eyes Indian Small Car Market

Chevrolet Sail
General Motors has been operating in India since 16 years and yet it has not been able to graduate in to a major player in the market. But it appears that the American carmaker has set its eyes on a larger market share and is looking to launch more small cars to achieve its goals.

GM India boss Lowell Paddock has revealed that the company has finally identified India as a predominantly small car driven market and henceforth try to cater to the high demand for small cars. General Motors India is looking to achieve a double digit growth in India and small cars are the only way forward.

Mr. paddocc also said GM was planning to increase its dealership and service network in the country. Further GM will be launching new MPVs to cater to the needs of family oriented car buyers. These MPVs are designed by GM's Chinese partner SAIC.

Another model model from GM will be the Sail premium hatchback. The Sail is aimed at the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Swift and the Hyundai i20. The Sail is also a product of the GM – SAIC partnership. The platform has been developed by the Chinese carmaker while the design and engineering has been modified to suite Indian conditions.

General Motors is also planning to launch a sedan version of the sail but Mr Paddock has not specified when. The Chevrolet Beat, Spark and Tavera are GM India's best selling products. The Cruze and Optra sedans also have a a sizable share in their respective segments.
