Maruti Suzuki Set To Replace 800 And Alto

Maruti Suzuki has already started developing the new 800cc car that will replace the Maruti 800. The entry level Alto is also powered by an 800cc engine found in the Maruti 800. Both these cars have seen regular updates but no radical change in design or power trains reducing their competitiveness against emerging new models from Hyundai, Tata Motors, Ford and Chevrolet.
Maruti Suzuki has been struggling to retain its market share and the contribution of the Alto has been very significant. The Alto is still India's best selling car but the leading Indian carmaker does not want to take the risk of having the aging car that will loose its shine.
The arrival of new competitors such as the Hyundai Eon, Honda Brio, Toyota Etios, Ford Figo has meant Maruti Suzuki does not have a safe place in the market. With new models getting preference from car buyers, the only way Maruti Suzuki can emerge successful is by launching new models.
The new model that it has chosen is an 800cc car that can be more fuel efficient yet as inexpensive as the Maruti 800 and the Alto. The Alto replacement is being developed jointly by Indian and Japanese engineers. The carmaker is already close to completing the development of a new 800cc engine that can be used in both the replacements of the 800 and the Alto.
Although Mr. Nakanishi has only confirmed what we already know, his statement indicates the carmaker's plans to modernize its fleet of cars more quickly than expected.
