Mercedes To Launch Five Compact cars In India

There have been reports about the Mercedes B-class being launched in India in 2012. The German carmaker which is competing with counterparts BMW and Audi wants to regain its top spot in the Indian premium car market by launching inexpensive cars that are affordable to the growing Indian middle class. Mercedes-Benz has always been considered a niche carmaker that builds cars for the upper echelons of the society. But the economic growth of the country has resulted in the middle class increasing its aspirations towards premium cars. To cater to this group of customers, Mercedes-Benz is planning to launch its A-Class and B-Class cars.
Both these two cars can be classified as premium cars but their relatively smaller size will mean lower excise tax and hence lower price. Lower price does not mean these two cars will be competing with regular cars. The A-class and B-Class will offer the comfort and luxury of a typical Mercedes but will be smaller. These two cars are expected to be priced between Rs.10 lakhs and Rs.20 lakhs.
Mercedes-Benz India is also planning to invest Rs.350 crores in India to facilitate the building of compact premium cars in the country. Mercedes wants to build all the cars sold in India in India itself so that it can compete well in terms of price. There are reports that say Mercedes-Benz will also launch five other global models in India in the coming days taking the number of new launches in India to 10. It is yet unclear when these ten new cars will be launched. It is believed these cars will be launched in a staggered manner through next year.
The carmaker will open a new paint shop in its plant in Chakan, Maharashtra followed by two assembly lines for the A-Class, B-Class, ML class and GL Class. Mercedes-Benz India is aiming to increase its production capacity to 15,000 units per month. The German premium carmaker is developing a strategy to launch its new cars in India so that it will remodel its image from just a premium carmaker to a powerful sports carmaker too. The launch of the SLS AMG and SLS AMG convertible is just one step in this plan.
