Mercedes B-Class Set For India Debut

Mercedes-Benz B-Class
Mercedes-Benz occupied the top rung on the Indian premium car market for several years until BMW made a huge splash and snatched its top spot. The German carmaker is not some one who will sit and watch when a competitor from its country overtakes it. In typical German style Mercedes-Benz is planning to launch a brand new model for the Indian market that will not only boost its image but also its presence in the Indian premium car market.

The car we are talking about is the new Mercedes-Benz B-Class sedan. The C-Class has been Benz's entry level car in India since the beginning. But the need to gain sales and boost volumes has necessitated the launch of a smaller, cheaper car that retains the class and quality of Mercedes-Benz. While several reports had said earlier that the car Benz was considering was the A-Class small car, it is in fact the B-Class which is more likely to be seen in India soon.

The B-Class has got a new lease of life and a fresh design was unveiled last year. It is a car that will be cater to families. Available in both petrol and diesel engines, the B-Class is expected to have a front wheel drive system as seen in Europe. The probable engines to be used are a 2.0-litre 136bhp CRDI engine in B200 CDI and a 1.6-litre 120bhp petrol engine. Both these engines will get a six speed manual gear box as standard with a dual clutch automatic transmission as an option.

Mercedes-Benz is currently working on tweaking the B-Class's suspension system to handle Indian road conditions better. There might even be some modifications to increase the car's ground clearance considering the deep pot holes and high road humps Indian drivers encounter on our roads. The Price of the car is expected to be around Rs.20 lakhs making it the cheapest Benz in India.

Mercedes-Benz is confident its sales will be boosted by the B-Class. It is aiming for a double digit increase in sales this year. The Premium carmaker has sold 7,430 cars in 2011. The company might also considering adding the A-Class to its line up in India but reports say it will be possible only after 2014. We will have to make to with the B-Class until we get a chance to ride the most inexpensive Benz.
