Small Cars Help Maruti Suzuki Regain Market Share

Maruti Suzuki is now aiming to regain lost ground in 2012. Its sales have been in the black for the first two months. Another notable aspect this year is the improved sales performance of the Swift hatchback. The sub-compact hatch was Maruti Suzuki’s third bestselling car of Maruti Suzuki behind the alto and Wagon R. But it has now emerged as the carmaker’s second bestselling car by overtaking the Wagon R.
The Maruti Suzuki alto remains India’s bestselling car. The alto is yet to see some tough competition. The Hyundai eon is yet to show it can be considered as a viable alternative for the Alto. The Wagon R’s relatively low price along with performance, space and comfort had helped it to the second spot. But the tremendous demand for diesel cars in recent months has helped the Swift push itself up. There were rumours that a Wagon r diesel could be launched but Maruti Suzuki has not confirmed it yet.
The Alto, Wagon R and Swift have helped improve Maruti Suzuki’s position in the market. Recent reports say Maruti Suzuki’s market share in January and February has increased to 40 per cent. Another car also needs to be given credit for Maruti Suzuki’s improved performance – The new Swift DZire. Incidentally, the new DZire also falls under the sub-compact segment making it a cheaper alternative than many other sedans. It is clear that Maruti Suzuki is trying to wrest back lost market share with what it does best – inexpensive and efficient small cars.
